Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines focus on control

KEY POINT

It is no longer relevant to classify and base treatment decisions for patients with asthma by severity of disease, according to the new Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines, published in November 2006 and available at www.ginasthma.com. Instead, the guidelines call for therapy to be based on control of symptoms, which accounts for fluctuations in severity and responsiveness to treatment.
