PPI use associated with a modest increase in certain types of fractures

KEY POINT

In an analysis of data from 130,487 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study, proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use was associated with a modest increase in clinical spine fractures, forearm or wrist fractures, and total fractures. However, the researchers observed no significant increase in hip fractures and only a marginal change in 3-year bone mineral density at the hip in PPI users.
