OTC PPIs: Patient counseling needed for correct administration

KEY POINT

Patients receiving proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) prescribed by a gastroenterologist  for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) were more likely to dose PPIs optimally (i.e., appropriate dose administered before breakfast) and report better symptom control than those taking PPIs prescribed by a primary care physician or purchasing these agents for OTC use.
