Pharmacogenetic testing for allopurinol hypersensitivity is beneficial in select groups


Testing for the human leukocyte antigen HLA-B*5801 allele before initiating allopurinol was found to be cost effective for black and Asian patients but not for white or Hispanic patients, according to results of a cost-effectiveness analysis published in Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism.
