Cheaper RA medications may be similar to biologics in slowing radiographic progression

KEY POINT

A meta-analysis of data from 70 published trials, including 112 comparisons, showed that disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), glucocorticoids, biologics, and a combination of these agents were all effective at reducing radiographic evidence of joint destruction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In addition, a single comparison showed that a combination of two DMARDs plus initial glucocorticoid therapy was as effective as a biologic plus methotrexate.
