Study finds 10-fold increased risk of potentially fatal skin reactions with allopurinol

Allopurinol use was associated with a 10-fold increased risk of severe cutaneous reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and erythema multiforme, as compared to no use of allopurinol. These adverse reactions had a 27% fatality rate and were most likely to occur in the first 30 days of use.
